Take a helicopter flight in Knysna. The small lagoon city is located in the heart of the Garden Route of South Africa and offers many sights at the Indian Ocean. It is pronounced Neiss-na and probably means something like ‘place of wood’. Indeed, the wood that grew in this area was the reason why the small fishing village was able to record strong growth in a relatively short time.

The coastal village is located on the Garden Route and has a beautiful lagoon, which is relatively spared of the displeasure of the Atlantic Ocean by two towering rock formations, the so-called ‘Heads’.
The 200-year-old town has around 28,000 inhabitants and became very interesting for seafaring when the rock passage was excavated in 1817, whereupon the timber trade, furniture and of course shipbuilding formed the economic backbone of the town.
The ideal location in the lagoon is still an anchorage for many yachts and sailing boats used by sport and amateur seafarers. In addition, Knysna lives from fishing, the oyster business, the (small) timber industry and tourism.
Attractions in Knysna
The Knysna Heads, which mark the rocky passage between the lagoon and the Indian Ocean, are one of the main attractions of the small town on the Garden Route. The Millwood House Museum, which is now a historical monument, exhibits items from the city's founding times and the briefly flared gold rush in Millwood.
The Angling Museum is primarily concerned with the subject of fish from a scientific point of view and in the Pledge Nature Reserve, which is only a 10-minute walk from the city center, nature lovers can find out about the fynbos flora and 100 more tree and plant species as well as 100 bird species.
On Main Street you will find St. George’s Chruch, built in 1855, which has an impressive interior with yellowwood.
Activities
At the Knysna Quais you can book a trip with the ‘Featherbed Ferry” to one of the Heads and go on an impressive hike there. Catamaran tours can also be undertaken from the port. The entire lagoon is a playground for various water sports such as water skiing, diving or snorkeling.
Around Knysna you will find dozens of hiking trails, a bird and monkey park. Two elephants were successfully resettled in the elephant park.
The Garden of Eden is well suited for a short, almost relaxed half-day excursion. This educational forest trail explains the local flora to hikers.
Restaurants
Those who want to get their money's worth in culinary terms have very good cards in Knysna. The famous Knysna Oyster Company offers fresh oysters in various sizes, types and preparations.
The Firefly Eating House, located on a dead end of the N2, is an experience for the palate and senses. Quite inconspicuous but with an oriental interior and extraordinary cuisine, which, as she says herself, plays with spices and flavors. Watch out spicy!
