History of the city.
Bartholomeu Diaz was the first European to set foot on South African soil in 1488. The seamen mainly Dutch found that there were very many mussels in Mossel Bay. That's where the name "Mossel Bay" originated from.
Mossel Bay got many refineries that produce gasoline from natural gas. In time more and more industries settled in Mossel Bay and the original charm of the fishing town was unfortunately lost.
Safaris and whale watching
The chances of spotting whales in Mossel Bay are very good from May to October. With a bit of luck you can spot them from ashore without going on a boot into the sea. Watch out for the whale flag, once its up whales have been sighted. If you want to get really close you can go by boot to watch these giants. There are many companies that offer different whale tours into the sunset or to see the seals.
Close to Mosselbaai you find the Botlierskop Private Game Reserve. This game reserve is situated right at the Garden Route. The park offers you safari to observe the wild animals that live there, and offers you even to stay overnight. If you are interested we gladly send you the prices.
Surfing, Diving and Beaches
Mossel Bay also offers you the opportunity to sunbath at the beach, or do various water sports. The safest and most popular pools are kept close together. We have the outer region for the more experienced surfer and the inner region were can ride the smaller waves.
At the outer region the waves are breaking to the right, best with a south westerly wind. These spots beginners should avoid, as it is very rocky further ahead. The surf spots are called:Ding Dang, Mystery Reef, Diaz Beach, Dana Bay , Hartenbos and Bayview.
