The park's history is young and unique among the country's national parks. The peculiarities of the national park with its rugged landscape, its well-watered valleys and its attractive homes have made it a preferred place for humans and animals for thousands of years.
The park was only named Pilanesberg National Park in 1979. At considerable expense, the land was replenished with game, the roots of human settlement were removed and the tourist infrastructure developed. This was the most expensive and largest wildlife management project ever carried out in a game reserve in South Africa.
A 110-kilometer-long fence was erected on very rough terrain, 188 kilometres of roads were built and more than 6,000 game animals were introduced. While wildlife resources are in sharp decline in most of Africa's developing countries, Pilanesberg National Park is one of the few areas where this trend has been dramatically reversed.
The challenge now is to develop and manage the national park in such a way that it can be used by our next generations.
The National Park exists in the transition zone between the dry Kalahari and the more humid Lowveld vegetation. South Africans call the area the Bushveld.
The park has a healthy population of lions, leopards, black and white rhinos, elephants and buffalo and is featured as a Big Five area in many travel guides.
From the geological point of view, the area is world famous. Its structure was formed by volcanic eruptions around 1,200 million years ago. The volcanic origin and the associated weathering of the extinct crater has led to a multitude of landscapes in addition to its unique size, shape and type of rock. It offers a wide range of habitats for all types of wild animals, especially the five great wild animals of Africa feel at home here.
It has the potential to host a greater variety of game species for a variety of reasons. The potential for endangered species like black rhinos is huge. You will also find many species of antelope, crocodiles, the nocturnal brown hyena, hippopotamus and cheetah.
