The port city owes its name to Sir Rufane Onkin. His wife died in 1817 and the city was named after her. The husband did not overcome his wife's death and committed suicide in 1841. A sandstone pyramid was built on the lighthouse in his honour.
Port Elizabeth - P.E. for short is a modern port city and offers something for every tourist. The new "The Boardwalk", a shopping centre with a casino store, shows an international level. Many restaurants and shops show the port city in a new guise.
The city offers a lot of South Africa's past, many historical buildings can be admired in the city centre. Visit the historic city centre, which shows you the royal statue of Queen Victoria in the market square. A highlight of a city tour is the neo-Gothic library from 1902 with its terracotta facade made in England. It was put together like a jigsaw puzzle in individually numbered pieces in Port Elizabeth.
The oldest part of the city is "The Hill". Here you can admire a renovated house from 1825. Many other historic houses date from the turn of the century and almost all have been lovingly restored.
If you want to see a dolphin show, the "Bay world" is ideal. Several shows take place here during the day, where dolphins and seals perform their tricks. At the moment it is closed! A museum and a snake park are also connected to the Bay world.
The surroundings of the coastal city also have many attractions. The eastern Karoo and the hinterland offer you orchards and cotton farms. Here you can see how cotton grows in the fields.
The real highlight of Port Elizabeth is the adjacent Addo National Park, which can offer you the Big 5 and, in the spring of South Africa, even the Big 6 (whales).
